love

I’m not the most religious of peeps, and let’s be honest, religion has gained a bad rep lately what with extremists and fundamentalists blowing the crap out of each other in the name of all fathers’ holy.  But sometimes we have to remember that most religions, in fact all religions, have at their core, deep messages of love, humanity, truth and a respect of all living things.  Christianity, in particular, has become unfashionable in modern life, and while I am by no means a church-goer or happy-clapper, there is something really lovely to be said for the quiet practice of faith; for taking the time to sit and reflect every day, to be grateful for what you have, to breathe, and to remember that there is a greater purpose out there for yourself and for humanity… Aye, I do think it is a very noble thing.  I found this beautiful quote today and my first thought on realizing where it came from was: “Ugh, it’s from the Bible.”  But as I re-read it, I had to remember that a great many things have come from the Bible, just as a great many things have come from the Koran, from the writings of Buddha and from the ancient scripts of Sanskrit.  Because it’s from the Bible and because Christianity may not have the following it once did, does not make the statement any less true.  It made me take a step back and see myself in an ugly, judgemental moment.  Rather embarrassing for a woman who likes to think of herself as a lover of life and people; a woman who does not like to be judgemental or selfish – a woman who likes to practise what she preaches.  You know deep down inside when you read or see something beautiful and true – when it tugs at your heartstrings and makes the lights go off in your head, and you know that you have to share it, despite where it may come from or whether it is of the popular opinion. This has convinced me all the more to share this quote from the Bible – from Corinthians to be precise – the book of love – because I think it’s beautiful, and appropriate and something we all need to learn and do in this day and age, regardless of our creed or religion.
